Prototype tooling can be a good choice when:

  • The product design is still being validated
  • Only a few hundred or several thousand molded parts are required
  • Real production material must be tested
  • Functional or assembly testing is required
  • The project is not yet ready for full production investment

One important advantage is the ability to test parts manufactured by actual injection molding rather than relying only on CNC machining or 3D printing.

When Should You Go Directly to a Production Mold?

Production tooling may be more economical when:

  • Product design has already been validated
  • Annual demand is relatively high
  • Long mold life is required
  • Stable repeat production is expected
  • Automatic molding is important
  • Cycle time strongly affects part cost

Building a prototype mold first is not automatically the best choice for every project.

If the design is mature and production quantities are clear, going directly to production tooling can avoid duplicate tooling investment.

Mold Design Should Follow the Project Requirement

There is no single mold specification suitable for every injection molding project.

Before quoting a mold, important information includes:

  • 2D and 3D part drawings
  • Plastic material and grade
  • Expected annual quantity
  • Required mold life
  • Surface finish or texture
  • Dimensional tolerances
  • Whether the mold will remain in China or be exported
  • Customer mold standards
